If Only There Was Someone Out There Who Loved You

The villain, Prince Hans, made his appearance in Disney's Frozen.  He is the only villain to double as both a villain and love interest.  If you would like a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "The Heart is Not So Easily Changed."

Pros:
- Handsome: He catches the eye of a princess and does have dashingly good looks... for a villain I mean.
- Smart: He does his research.  He knows exactly how to get what he wants, the Kingdom of Arendelle, and he knows just how to get it.  He knows he can't get to Elsa and that Anna would be so desperate as to marry him and he had their death's planned and everything.

Cons:
- Manipulative: He tricked a lot of people into thinking that he was a good guy and wanted the best for Anna and Arendelle (except Elsa, she was not having it).  Let's admit, that plot twist at the end shook all of us. #loveisnotanopendoor
- Murdering Tendencies: If it weren't for Anna turning into solid ice, Hans would have succeeded in murdering Elsa, the Queen of Arendelle.  Not to mention doesn't help Anna.  He just locks her in a room to die. #treason
- Stupid:  He locked Anna in a room to die.  Did he think that someone would eventually find her locked in there, seriously dude, think through your plan.  #wouldn'tmakeagoodmurderer

This just goes to show that love is not always an open door

Mother Knows Best

The villain, Mother Gothel, made her appearance in Disney's Tangled.  If you would like a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "A Girl with Golden Hair."

Pros:
- Motherly: In a sense, she does care for Rapunzel.  She does protect her and take her in as her own, regardless of the fact that she never let's her leave and only want's her hair.
- Smart: She keeps Rapunzel hidden for 18 years, that takes some strategic planning and patience.  She managed to keep an entire tower and curious young girl trapped, away from a world.  That is, until she left.

Cons:
- Unrealistic: Did she really think she was going to keep Rapunzel hidden and locked away her entire life?  That is unrealistic expectations.  What is she going to do when Rapunzel is old and passes on?  She will no longer have "her flower."  Think it through completely people, plan ahead!
- Kidnapper: I mean, she kidnapped a baby.  A ROYAL BABY!  #notgood #evil
- Manipulative/Emotionally Abusive:  She traps Rapunzel in a tower for 18 years, never let's her leave, not even outside the tower, every time Rapunzel asks to go somewhere, she yells and or manipulates her to stay.  If this was in modern times, child services would be immediately called.  Not to mention she would go to jail for kidnapping.  #nobigdeal

Just remember, Mother Knows Best ;)

I've Got Friends On The Other Side

The villain, Dr. Facilier, made his appearance in Disney's The Princess and the Frog.  If you would like a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "Dig a Little Deeper."

Pros:
- Charismatic: He certainly knows how to put on a show!  He does a great job convincing Prince Naveen and more impressively, the cautious, Lawrence that trusting him is a good idea.  He almost manages to get Tiana to believe him as well.
- Smart: He knows how to get his way and will stop at nothing to do so.  He knows just the right things to say to get people to go along with him and his ways.

Cons:
- Unprepared: He isn't prepared for what might happen if his plans don't go the way he intended.  What was the plan if Naveen got away?  What would they do if they got found out?  These are things he must prepare for, but he didn't.
- Twists the truth: He tells people what they want to hear regardless of if that is actually what they will get.  When he said he sees green in Naveen's future, he didn't mean money, he meant a frog.  He twists the truth to benefit himself.
- Doesn't follow the rules:  When his plan is not accomplished and he has to ask his "friends from the other side" for help, and still doesn't manage to succeed.  He made a deal with them and didn't follow it and now he has to face the consequences.

Wow, Is My Hair Out?

The villain, Hades, made his appearance in Disney's Hercules.  Hades is one of my personal favorite villains and character.  If you would like a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "Not a Damsel in Distress."

Pros:
- Hilarious: Hades has plenty of laughter to go around.  He's living for all eternity as a god and hasn't run out of jokes yet.
- Patient: He waits eighteen years for his plan to rule the world to play out.  If that isn't patience, I don't know what is.
- Fair: Regardless of Hades evil doings, he is fairly fair.  He makes deals with these people and they do accept that, so he isn't totally to blame for their sorrow and pitty.  Also, if you had the title of god of the dead bestowed upon you by your own brother, you'd be pretty resentful too.

Cons:
- Doesn't read the fine print... in his own deal: He promised Hercules Meg wouldn't be hurt if he took away his power, but he didn't think about what would happen if she did.  She sacrificed herself sot that his deal would be broken.  Think about it Hades, she loves him, of course she would ruin your plans.
- Unorganized: You would think if you spent eighteen years to plan a world domination against your own family you would be a little more prepared.  To be fair, he didn't see Hercules getting in the way at first, but he didn't think the gods would fight back.  It was really just pure chaos.
- Resentful:  Yes, god of the dead was bestowed upon him, but does he think of Zeus and his decision process.  Someone had to be god of the dead.  Who would he have chosen?  It's no reason to destroy your entire family and nephew.

Bonus picture because I love these two and this movie so much!

Shan Yu

The villain, Shan Yu, made his appearance in Disney's Mulan.  I tried to think of a more entertaining title for this guy, but he maybe speaks three time throughout the whole film.  If you would like a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "The Flower That Blooms in Adversity."

Pros:
- Powerful: He creates a powerful army and is a great leader in regards to that.  He does an okay job of trying to take over China.  If it weren't for Mulan, he may have been successful.
- Strong and Resilient: A mountain falls on him, and he somehow manages to survive as well as continue to fight.  A MOUNTAIN!

Cons:
- Underestimates his opponent: He underestimated Mulan and her strength in being a woman.  This was the common view point back then; women did not fight.  Mulan showed him.
- Merciless: He didn't care who was in his way, he would kill, hurt, and destroy anyone or anything he had to.  He even did it for the heck of it.
- Vengeful:  Like many villains, revenge fuels their actions.  Although this doesn't explain Shan Yu's reasoning behind taking over China, it does explain his anger towards "Ping."

I've Never Been a Popular Man

The villain, John Ratcliffe, made his appearance in Disney's Pocahontas.  He may not be the most popular Disney villain, but he is worth mentioning.  If you would like a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "Listen With Your Heart."

 Pros:
- Obedient: He technically did what he was supposed to and followed King James' orders.
- Successful: He's obviously a really successful man to run an expedition to the new world.

Cons:
- Selfish: He sings a song titled "Mine, mine, mine" where he sings about wanting all the gold for himself.  Nobody seems to question him.
- Deceptive: He tries to make the crew feel as if they are important in this expedition, but he just needs them for hard labor to get his gold.
- Racist:  The song "savages" says it all.  Way to not change your opinions sir.

I Think It's Time to Say Goodbye to Prince Abooboo

The villain, Jafar, made his appearance in Disney's Aladdin.  He is still to this day, the only Disney villain to share a kiss with the leading lady.  I know what you're thinking, "Hello, Frozen!" but you're forgetting, they didn't actually kiss.  We'll get back to that later.  If you would like a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "Not a Prize to be Won."

 Pros:
- Strategy: He has good strategy at getting what he wants and does pretty good at not getting caught in his actions.  He's secretive and mulipuative, now if only he would use it for good.
- Determined: He goes to great lengths to become the Sultan.  He risks everyone else's life except his own.
- His beard is so twisted: need I say more? ;)

Cons:
- Disturbing: Seriously?  He wants to marry Jasmine?  He's at least twice her age! #ew
- Stupid:  Yeah, just listen to Aladdin, your mortal enemy, when he tells you to wish to be a genie.  That won't have any consequences what's so ever.
- Manipulative:  He manipulates the Sultan with his powers ALL THE TIME!  If he wasn't a sorcerer he would be pretty useless though.

My What A Guy That Gaston

The famous swoon worthy villain, Gaston, made his appearance in Disney's Beauty and the Beast.   If you would like a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "A Beauty but a Funny Girl."

 Pros:
- Confident: One thing that Gaston surely has is confidence.  He knows himself and loves himself enough to be fearless.  Though his confidence is on the verge of narcissistic.
- Handsome: Although, I don't find Gaston as handsome as he may claim to be, he is one of the better looking Disney villains.
- Leader:  Gaston knows how to be a leader!  He knows how to get people on his side and trust him in his endeavors whether good or not.

Cons:
- Obsessive: He is OBSSESED with Belle.  He never leaves her alone and is constantly knowing where she is, what she's doing and never takes no for an answer when it comes to her.
- Selfish:  He never thinks about Belle's wants or needs in any situation.  He tries to marry her when she clearly doesn't want to and when he doesn't get his way, he tries to kill the man she loves and wants to lock up her and her father.
- Narcissistic:  There is no doubting that Gaston has confidence, but it is almost too much.  It's great that he thinks highly of himself, but he could tone it down a bit and think about others. #loveyourself #nothatmuch

Poor Unfortunate Souls

The famous sea witch and eight tentacled creature, also known as Ursula, made her appearance in Disney's The Little Mermaid.   If you would like a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "Thingamabobs and Dinglehoppers."  Ursula has a sister Morgana, whom we meet in The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea.

 Pros:
- Fair, regardless of her being evil: Believe it or not, Ursula is one of the villains who is most fair.  Technically, her contract was legal and Ariel did sign it.  Ariel did go to her for help, which she did do.  She could have just as easily said no.  Also, I feel like taking your voice is a small price to pay for a body transformation.  You don't just get handed things in life.
- Sassy:  Ursula is the queen of sass.  She is dramatic, demanding and confident.
-Takes matters into her own tentacles:  Although she tries to sabotage Ariel for her own endeavors, she knows how to get what she wants when she wants it.

Cons:
- Manipulative: She did hypnotize the prince as well as disguise herself for her own gain.  She also worked really hard to convince Ariel it was a good idea to become human.  Seriously, a musical number and everything.  She knows how to play her cards right, now she just needs to learn how to do it for the right reasons.  I will admit, she is good at it. #poorunfortunatesouls
- Greedy: Need I say more.  I feel like we were all a bit terrified when Ursula finally got the trident and crown she craved for so long.

Ursula's character is an interesting one.  In the original story by Hans Christian Andersen, the sea witch is seen in a very different light and Ariel must endure much more than losing her voice and getting her happily ever after.  If you would like to view my comparison between this Disney classic and its original tale, check out "The Little Mermaid: Her Part in our World!"

The Mistress of All Evil

The famous Maleficent, made her appearance in Disney's Sleeping Beauty.  She also makes appearances in her own featured Film Maleficent. If you would like a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "A Delicate Rose."

Pros:
- Patient: She waits patiently for sixteen years for Aurora to come out of hiding.  She would have waited sixteen years from her birth anyways, but still, that's a long time to wait for revenge.
- Dramatic:  Maleficent sure knows how to make an entrance, a curse, make herself a dragon and basically everyone fear her at any point of the day. #girlpower
- Determined:  She won't let anything stop her from getting her way.  Turning into a fire breathing dragon is the lengths she'll go to get what she wants.

Cons:
- Harsh: Was this really a necessary punishment for not being invited to a party?  Maybe if she's chill out and not curse everyone for random reasons, she would be invited more often.  #chillout
- Evil: She is arguably one of the most evil Disney villains of all time.  She curses a child, and tortures basically everyone if they get in her way.  #nomercy

In Disney's live action film Maleficent, she was given more of a backstory than in Disney's original.  I think this helped develop her character and personality and almost gave a reason to feel sympathy towards her.  Heartbreak can make people do unspeakable things.  I honestly believe that villains are the most interesting characters in any story.  It shows what a person can do under the influence of hatred and pain.  Everyone has a bit of evil inside of them and its interesting to watch evil unfold.

Stepmother

The famous evil stepmother, also known as Lady Tremaine, made her appearance in Disney's Cinderella.  She also makes appearances in the sequels Cinderella II: Dreams Come True and Cinderella III: A Twist in Time.  If you would like a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "Slippers Made of Glass."  Cinderella also had two stepsisters, Anastasia and Drizella, who were considered to be evil as well; however, under the influence of their mother they were, but that they weren't truly evil.

Pros:
- Determined: She is not only determined to have her daughters married off to the prince, but she is also determined to keep Cinderella hidden from the rest of the world.
- Wants the best for herself and her daughters:  When she hears about the ball, she makes sure that her and her daughters get new dresses and look their best for the ball.  She would do anything for her daughters no matter what the cost.  For her stepdaughter, that is not the case.
Cons:
- Manipulative: 'like many villains, she is able to manipulated Cinderella into many things.  She always has something up her sleeve to ruin Cinderella's life.
- Abusive: She forces her stepdaughter to sleep in an attic, to do all of the chores, doesn't let her socialize or leave the house and she locks her in the attic to keep her from coming down the stairs when the duke arrives.  Today, this would be called child abuse.
- Lazy: Really?  She cant do a single chore in the entire mansion of a house?  She cant make her own food?  How did she survive before Cinderella?

In Disney's live action film of Cinderella, the evil stepmother was given more of a backstory than in Disney's original.  I think this helped develop her character and personality and almost gave a reason to feel sympathy towards her, which Cinderella does in the movie.  I honestly believe that villains are the most interesting characters in any story.  It shows what a person can do under the influence of hatred and pain.  Everyone has a bit of evil inside of them and its interesting to watch evil unfold.

The Fairest of Them All

The Evil Queen was featured in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.  She is the very first villain in a Disney princess film!  Fun fact, her name is said to be Queen Grimhilde.  With a name like that, how do you expect your kid to be anything but evil.  If you would like a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "An Apple a Day."

Pros:
- Strong: She is a strong female character (like many villains within Disney movies), regardless of if she is evil or not.
- Powerful: She is capable of manipulating Snow White as well as transforming herself into an old woman.  That takes a lot of power and a lot of guts.

Cons:
- Manipulative:  She manipulates Snow White and takes advantage of her kindness to kill her with the innocence of an apple.
- Jealous: Her only reasoning behind killing Snow White is that she is simply more beautiful than her.  I personally think the Evil Queen is a lot farther down the list of "the fairest of them all" than second to Snow White, but whatever.
- Murderous Tendencies: She simply wants Snow White dead and if that isn't bad enough, she makes somebody else do it for her.  Luckily he fails and she has to do it herself and look how that worked out. It's nothing we can look past right?... Right?

The Evil Queen isn't a very developed character throughout Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.  None of the characters truly were at this point at Disney Studios.  I'm hoping her reasoning behind killing Snow White has a little bit more behind it, but I suppose we'll never know.

If you aren't satisfied with this story of Snow White, I would highly recommend Once Upon a Time on ABC.  It gives all the characters a nice background and makes them all a little less shallow and a lot more real.

Finding Dory: Family, Hope and Forgetfulness

I hope you read and enjoy my review of Disney Pixar's new movie, Finding Dory!  Let me know what you think!

Finding Dory: Family, Hope and Forgetfulness

We all remember the lovable sidekick Dory from Pixar's Finding Nemo.  Twelve years later and they are finally getting around to a sequel (Squeals of excitement) and I know for a fact that more twenty something's will be seeing this movie than children.  I went to go see it on fathers day and I am delighted to share with you the story of Dory.  WARNING:  There will be spoilers, so if you haven't seen it and want to, skip to the overview section of this review.

Story:

The story starts out with baby Dory and her parents (baby Dory is THE CUTEST btw).  We see Dory as a child wandering the ocean asking for help finding her family.  Her age slowly progresses as she wanders across the ocean looking for them, while slowly forgetting what/whom she is looking for.  Dory than sees a boat rush by and she bumps into Marlin who is asking if anyone has seen a boat.  Hence reminding us of their inevitable meeting in Finding Nemo
The screen than flashes to one year later and we see Dory dreaming. Dory wakes up Marlin and Nemo, they head to school where Dory joins Nemo and his class for a field trip to watch the sting ray migration.  The class than asks Dory if she remembers her family.  Dory responds saying she doesn't remember them specifically, but everybody's got to come from somewhere.  She then gets distracted when she sees the undertow.  She get's a flashback of her and her family.  She remembered wanting to swim over to some other blue tang fish and her parents pull her away as she is about to swim into the undertow.  They sing a cute little song to remind Dory that she must not swim near the undertow.  This scene ends with Dory's parents reassuring Dory that they will never forget her and she will never forget them (cue tear).  She also remembers The Marine Life Institute in California.  In the present, Dory had passed out and when she wakes up, Marlin is next to her.  She wakes up and immediately wants to find the family she had just remembered.  Marlin and Nemo stop her at first, but Dory gives a touching speech where she says she misses them, do you know what that's like?  Marlin understands and agrees to help her.
They make their way across the ocean on the back of a familiar sea turtle, Crush.  Once they make their way to California, Dory begins calling for her parents and gets stuck in a plastic pop can holder, a boat swims by and takes Dory.  It turns out, the boat is from The Marine Life Institute, while Dory is in quarantine, she meets an octopus (he's really a septapus because he only has 7 arms) named Hank.  After multiple introductions and explanations, he agrees to take her to find her family in return for her tag to be sent to an aquarium in Ohio.  On their way, Dory finds her way into the tank of a Wale Shark named Destiney.  Destiny turns out to be an old childhood friend of Dory's who tells her that her parents are in the open ocean exhibit.
Meanwhile, Nemo and Marlin have found a loon named Becky to help them get to Dory.  With many stops along the way, Dory finally makes it to the open ocean exhibit and tries to find her parents, when she spots a sea shell.  She then has another flashback of her parents, remembering that if she ever get's lost, follow the shells home.  She also remembers how she got lost.  She was trying to find her mother a purple shell (her favorite) and she got swept into the undertow and taken to the ocean through the pipes.  She follows the shells and finds her home, but to her dismay, her parents are gone.  She than asks someone near by where she might find them and they say that all the blue tangs are moving to the exhibit in Ohio and she needs to get to quarantine.
She makes her way through the pipes with the help of her friends, finds Nemo and Marlin along the way and they make it to quarantine.  She than get's into the tank of the blue tang's, but her parents are not there either.  The tang's remember Dory and lightly tell her that her parents are probably gone forever.  Hank. the septapus, takes Dory out of the tank before she get's put on a truck to Ohio, but Nemo and Marlin are left trapped inside.  Dory is devastated knowing her parents may be dead that she doesn't know what to do.
She ends up back in the ocean and does what Dory does best, she sees something and follows it.  As she goes through her Dory problem solving skills, she finds a sea shell.  She than sees a trail of them and follows it.  She reaches the end and sees multiple trails leading to the one spot, but nobody is there.  She turns away and we see two blue tang fish holding shells.  Dory spots them, she than says " Hi I'm Do..." but before she can finish, the two fish swim to her and hug her saying "I knew you would find us."  Dory than starts talking about all of the adventures she has and remembers Nemo and Marlin.  She swims to the shores to save them. but her parents stop her.  They don't want her to go because they don't want to lose her again.  She assures them that if she found them once, she can do it again, and that she needs to save Nemo and Marlin because they are her family.
Dory and her friends follow the truck from the ocean, stop traffic and manage to get on the truck.  Hank drives the truck with Dory as his eyes and they drive it into the ocean, setting all of the fish, including Marlin and Nemo free.
The final seen is when Nemo, Marlin, Dory and her parents are back home.  Dory tells Marlin she is going to the drop off to "enjoy the view," a joke explained earlier in the movie.  Marlin secretly follows her to make sure she doesn't get lost.  He finds her safe and sound at the drop off and goes to stand by her.  She than begins to explain to Marlin that finding her parents helped her realize something, she can do it on her own.

There is also a scene at the end, after the credits where we see our fish tank friends from Finding Nemo.  They are still in bags and have made it all the way to The Marine Life Institute when Gill says "nothing bad will happen to us here" when they are suddenly swept up by people on a boat to be put in quarantine at the institute.

What went well:

Ellen DeGeneres:  She is the perfect voice actress for Dory.  She can change from subject to subject swiftly and effortlessly which is helpful for Dory's character.  I always enjoy Dory in her funny moments, but seeing her with a more serious side was beautiful and insightful.  Ellen hit this role out of the park, even with a twelve year gap.

Internal Struggle:  I love the contrast with Finding Nemo with the idea of an internal struggle.  Finding Nemo focused on the physical boundaries between Marlin and Nemo, where as Dory's boundary was between her and short term memory loss more than anything.  I love how this idea and the similarities in the boundaries was represented.  I think this message is an important one for both children and adults.  Internal struggle is just as important as external struggle and you can conquer both.

WWDD: What Would Dory Do?  I loved how many character throughout this movie used this motto throughout the film. Even though Dory struggles with memory, she always manages to follow her gut and save the day!

Family Message:  The idea of family played a huge role in this movie.  I enjoyed Dory finding her actual family, but still wanted to save Nemo and Marlin because they had become her family through circumstance and had taken her in as their own.  It is a beautiful thing.  Your family isn't your only family in this world and that gives me great joy!

Animation:  As always, Disney and Pixar's animation skills are incredible!  They always put in so much effort to make it perfect and it always pays off.

What went wrong:

No explanation of Dory's memory loss:  I was hoping for more explanation of Dory's memory loss.  I thought it might have something to do with the pollution surrounding the institute, but that was hardly mentioned at all and her memory loss was never explained.

Moved Quickly:  This one could just be me, but the movie seemed to move quite fast.  I do realize that they have to cram a story into an hour and half time slot, but I would have liked more build in places.

Sequel:  As much as I adored Finding Dory, it is a sequel.  It is a better sequel than most, but I will argue that it is not better than the original.

Characters:

Dory: Dory was my favorite character in this movie.  I loved seeing her funny and serious side come out in this movie, however, it might have been nice to see her character develop even more when learning about her past.  However, I know this would be difficult to do with a character who has short term memory loss so I am not too upset about it.
Marlin:  Marlin stepped back in his role in this movie and let Dory take the lead.  He is his old loveable and worried self, but he learns some good lessons throughout this movie from both Dory and Nemo that help him grow and accept Dory for who she is.

Nemo:  Nemo served as a good companion for Dory in this movie.  When she forgot what she said, he would often remind her and be her advocate when it came to Marlin.  It was his idea to think like Dory in the Marine Life Institute and he helped them find her.  He also accepted Dory as family to him before Marlin or Dory even realized it.

Destiny:  Destiny, the nearsighted whale shark was a cute addition to this movie.  Most of Dory's interactions have been with male characters and to give her a loving female friend who was linked to her past was wonderful.  I loved their bond as well as their whale language together.

Bailey:  The beluga whale whose sonar is supposedly not working is a great addition to the gang as well.  He is Destiny's neighbor at the institute who becomes very handy and when him and Destiny communicate, laughs will follow.

Hank:  Hank is the stubborn septapus.  A stubborn old septapus turns a little soft after meeting and helping Dory.  Before he drops her into the open ocean tank, she says she will never forget him.  He responds with "you'll forget me in a few minutes.  I'm going to have trouble forgetting you though." Aww, cue the heart strings.

Charlie and Jenny:  Charlie and Jenny are Dory's parents and explain so much about why and who Dory is.  In many of the flashback scenes we see them often making up songs for Dory to remember, including our personal favorite, "Just Keep Swimming."

Seals:  The seals were clearly comic relief, but some of my favorite characters of the movie.  They even made my dad crack up laughing in the theatre and on the way, which doesn't happen much for him with Disney movies.

Overview:

This movie was a fantastic addition to the Disney Pixar family and I would recommend anyone go and see it!  It has laughter and tears, as well as being familiar and joyful!  So swim into the theatre to see Disney Pixar's Finding Dory!  Don't forget to stay after the credits!

A Bit of a Fixer Upper

Kristoff, made his appearance in Disney's Frozen.  If you would like to read a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "The Heart is not so Easily Changed."

Pros:
- Musician: He can play the mandolin like there is not tomorrow.  He also has a good set of pipes.
- Resourceful:  Spending most of his life in the woods, he is very resourceful and knows how to survive.
- Loving:  He loves Anna truly and deeply.  He gives her over to Hans because he wants her happiness and he runs into a wicked snow storm to save her.

Cons:
- Sassy:  He is one of the sassier Disney princes.  He often has a remark about everything and is not afraid to speak his mind.
- He's a fixer upper:  He's a bit reserved, quirky and doesn't really know how to function as a normal human being, especially a prince.
- Disgusting: He shares his food with a reindeer, he pees in the woods and he picks his nose.  Need I say more?

You Were My New Dream

Flynn Rider (a.k,a, Eugene Fitzherbert), made his appearance in Disney's Tangled.  He was also voted Disney's best looking prince.  If you would like to read a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "A Girl With Golden Hair."

Pros:
- Funny: He is always cracking a joke.  His sarcasm is on point.
- Handsome:  He is voted the most attractive Disney prince so there's that. #ModelStatus #TheyJustCan'tGetHisNoseRight
- Kind Hearted:  He is much kinder and cares more than he originally lets on.  He opens up to Rapunzel and we get to see his soft, kind hearted side.
- Self-sacrificing:  He cut off Rapunzel's hair that could have saved his life for Rapunzel's freedom.

Cons:
- A Thief:  He has stolen many things from Rapunzel's kingdom, along with the hearts of Tangled fans everywhere.
- Stretch's the truth:  He wasn't completely honest with Rapunzel at first and consciously tried to sway her from her dream.
- Takes Advantage of innocence:  He takes advantage of Rapunzel's innocence and puts her in dangerous situations.  He tries to sway her from her dream so he didn't have to help her, but they eventually fell in love and he didn't mind helping her anymore.

A Fabulous Mincer

Prince Naveen, made his appearance in Disney's The Princess and the Frog.  If you would like to read a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "Dig a Little Deeper."

Pros:
- Adventurous: He is always on the quest for adventure.  To him, the sky is the limit.
- Charming:  He is unbelievably charming which can be considered good and bad in some cases.
- Passionate:  He is very passionate about music.  He refuses to stick to life of royalty, but would rather play music.  He is also very passionate about Tiana and doing what ever it takes to give Tiana her restaurant after he falls in love with her.

Cons:
- A Lady's man:  He is a bit of a lady's man and can be a bit flaky when it comes to relationships.
- Conceited:  Growing up royal, everything was about him.  Once he was cut off from money, he still expected to be treated like royalty and doesn't care for others emotions.  Though he does learn to care for others in the end, thanks to Tiana.
- Lazy/Unmotivated:  Let's face it, he is extremely lazy.  Why wouldn't he be considering he has never had to do a thing in his life and has no idea how.  Luckily, Tiana taught him how to mince and showed him the value of hard work.  They taught each other, learned from each other and it changed their lives forever.

I'll Make a Man Out of You

General Lee Shang, made his appearance in Disney's Mulan.  Although, he is technically not a Disney Prince, he is a spouse of a Disney princess.  If you would like to read a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "The Flower that Blooms in Adversity."

Pros:
- Brave: He is a warrior and is entrusted with the role of general by his father.
- Honorable:  He spares Mulan's life after her reveal of being a woman after she saved his life.
- Hard Working/Motivated:  He whips a bunch of men (and a woman) into shape.  He doesn't give up on them and works them hard to make sure they will succeed at their task.

Cons:
- Stubborn:  He is stubborn when it comes to doing things his way.
- Oblivious:  He was oblivious to his feelings towards Mulan and had to wait for the emperor to force it out of him.
- Reserved:  We don't learn much about Shang and he is very reserved when it comes to his emotions.  Maybe its a military thing.

Go the Distance

Hercules, made his appearance in Disney's Hercules.  Although, he is technically not a Disney Prince, he is a beloved Disney hero.  If you would like to read a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "Not A Damsel in Distress."

Pros:
- Demi-god:  Let's face it.  Being a demi-god is super cool. #superstrength
- Nice Guy:  He is nice to everyone and protects the people around him.
- Hard Working/Motivated:  He goes from being a farm boy to becoming a hero.  He never gives up on his dream and is motivated to find the place where he belongs.  He also motivates others while doing so.  That is a rare gift indeed.
- Gave up being a god for love:  Even through all of his hard work to be reunited with his father on Mount Olympus, he not only saves the love of his life, but give up his godly hood to be with her #aww #jumpintotheriverofdeath #noproblem

Cons:
- Clumsy:   This is what got him into trouble in the first place.  He has these amazing powers of strength, but running into things and destroying the agora is not exactly the way to friend people.
- Failed to see the point of a "true hero":  He did succeed at this in the end, but it took him until he gave up his life for Meg's to really figure it out. #godstatus
- A little too confident at times:  There were times when he was a bit cocky in his abilities.  He assumed nobody could defeat him, but that isn't always the case.

If I Never Knew You

John Smith, made his appearance in Disney's Pocahontas.  Although, he is technically not a Disney Prince, he is the love interest of an official Disney Princess.  If you would like to read a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "Listen With Your Heart."

Pros:
- Came to New World create Peace:  He wanted peace between the settlers from England and the Indians; at least in the Disney movie.
- Did not give up on peace or on Pocahontas:  He was determined to create peace and he fought for it, was captured for it and almost died for it.
- Open to learning new things:  He was willing to learn about the world through Pocahontas' eyes and see the world as earth rather than as just resources.  He was also willing to learn about the Indian people.
- Almost Sacrificed himself for peace and for love:  He was willing to die for peace and for Pocahontas, but luckily Pocahontas saved him.  However, he was injured from the gunshot of his own men and had to leave to be healed.

Cons:
- Was stubborn to see their ways: at first, he was stuck in his ways and found the ways that the Indian people did things to be absurd and wrong, which was not necessarily the case.
- He never messaged Pocahontas after he left:  He left to be healed and never contacted Pocahontas about his health or about his return someday.
- Racist:  The word savages was said many times throughout the movie.  There was even a song named after it.  Everyone who was there was pretty racist against the Indian people.  Luckily, John Smith changed his ways in the end.

A Diamond in the Rough

Prince Ali (aka. Aladdin), made his appearance in Disney's Aladdin.  If you would like to read a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "Not a Prize to Be Won."

Pros:
- A Diamond in the Rough: He knows right from wrong and follows it.  He has a big heart and despite his personal struggles is always willing to lend a helping hand.  He also makes the most out of what he has and never complains.
- Keeps his promises... eventually: He eventually keeps his promise to the Genie and sets him free, it just takes him a little time to figure it out.
- Scrappy:  He knows how to get away from the guards and live on his own.
- Selfless: Even though he is poor, he gives away his food to some poor children and is polite to everyone he meets.  He would do anything to help anyone.
- Loves for love, not for social standing and money: He falls in love with Jasmine before he knows she's a princess and loves her for her, not for her money and power.

Cons:
- Thief: He does steal, but to be fair, he does have to eat to live and has to steal to eat. #OtherwiseWe'dGetAlong
- Lies: He deliberately lied to Jasmine and despite his good intentions, he should have told her.  She liked him before he claimed to be a "prince" anyways. #TeamLove
- Selfish: For the most part, Aladdin was fairly selfless, but during a time in the movie he became caught up in being a prince that he forgot what was really important and put his friends behind him instead of their needs first.  To be fair, he did learn his lesson.

For Who Could Ever Learn to Love a Beast?

Prince Adam, better known as The Beast, made his appearance in Disney's Beauty and the Beast.  If you would like to read a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "A Beauty but a Funny Girl".

Pros:
- Not murderous unless necessary: He doesn't and has no intention to harm Maurice or Belle.  He only kills in case of survival.
- Willing/Open to change: He knows he needs to change his ways and is willing to try to do so after meeting Belle.
- He's open to love: He is more than willing to find love (arguably his ultimate goal), he just doesn't exactly look for it in the right way.
- He's brave: He saves Belle's life multiple times and is ultimately willing to die for her in the end.
- He has a heart and feels sympathy: He doesn't make Belle stay in the dungeon, he makes a deal with Belle for her father's life and he let's her go see Maurice when he get's sick.

Cons:
- Short tempered: He get's angry easily... very easily. #StayOutOfTheWestWing
- Demanding: He goes about finding love in a very wrong way by demanding Belle eat with him.  He needs some lessons on how to woo a woman.
- Selfish: This is how he became a beast in the first place.  He treats strangers and even his staff in a rude and selfish way.  To be fair, he was only eleven, had no parents and was probably in great emotional distress running whatever he runs as a prince when he was turned into a beast.  I would be a bit irate, irritated and selfish myself, but that's beside the point.

She Had the Most Beautiful Voice

Prince Eric made his appearance in Disney's The Little Mermaid. He also made an appearance (and did sing) in the sequel The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea. He is also our very first and only Disney Prince to not sing in his movie!  Prince Eric is arguably the most handsome Disney Prince of the Disney renessiance, but that's just my opinion. If you would like to read a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "Thingamabob's and Dinglehoppers"

Pros:
- He's musical: He plays the flute, the most manly of instruments.  Way to step outside the gender norms Eric!  Every girl loves a man whose musically talented.
- He knows how to sail: Need I say more.
- He's handsome: with blue eyes as blue as the sea. #swoon
- He's kind: He takes in a mute girl on the beach, feeds her, gives her a place to stay and shows her around his kingdom.
- Saved the day: He saved Ariel's life and killed the evil sea witch Ursula.

Cons:
- Blatant: He awkwardly stares at Ariel the first time they have dinner together... seriously, right at her. #noshame

- Oblivious: He takes longer than 3 days to "Kiss the Girl" and is oblivious the fact that 1) Ariel is the girl that saved him 2) He's in love with her and 3) He was hypnotized by Vanessa (a.k.a Ursula in disguise) to get him to marry her instead.
- Bad Guesser: He sucks at guessing names.  It's okay Eric, I'm bad with names too.

Prince Eric is personally one of my favorite Disney Prince's. but I am a bit biased because I love this movie so much.  Who is your favorite Disney Prince?  Write it in the comments below!

A Sword and a Shield

Prince Philip made his appearance in Disney's Sleeping Beauty.  He is also our very first named Disney Prince!  In my opinion, Sleeping Beauty should have been named after this dashing prince; for he does more throughout the entire movie than Aurora ever does.  If you would like to read a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "A Delicate Rose."

Pros:
- Brave: He fights through many obstacles, is captured by Maleficent and defeats Maleficent in the form of a dragon!  Way to be Philip!  That's a lot to go through for a girl.  Way to show the love.
- Wants to marry for love: He refuses to marry the princess that his father had set him up to marry because he wanted to marry for love (even though they end up being the same person).  Arranged marriages are so 13th century.  This is the 14th century for goodness sake!
Cons:
- Creepy: He kisses an unconscious girl.  What is with obsession with this?  It's just plain creepy.
- Disobedient: He refuses to marry the girl had promised to him.  This is disobedient; although he does end up marrying her unknowing she was the girl he fell in love with in the woods as well as being the princess he was arranged to marry. Every one wins!

Prince Philip played a very crucial role in the movie Sleeping Beauty.  This is a great change of pace from past Disney movies and the beginning of the princes getting a storyline and character development!

The Pumpkin Prince

Our second Prince Charming of the bunch, made his appearance in Disney's Cinderella.  He also makes appearances in the sequels Cinderella II: Dreams Come True and Cinderella III: A Twist in Time.  If you would like a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "Slippers Made of Glass."

Pros:
- Determined: He searched every inch of his kingdom to find his princess.  He made sure every maiden tried on the slipper.  That's what I call determination.
- Kind:  We don't see much of him in the original, but in the sequel and prequel he is a very kind and generous guy.
Cons:
- Stupid: You would think he would recognize the woman of his dreams and realize she isn't all of the women that tried on the shoe before her.
- Slow: When Cinderella was running out of the ball, she was running in heels and through a crowded castle, and lost a shoe on the way out.  How was he not able to catch her.  Maybe run a few laps there prince.  If she can outrun you in glass slippers, we have a problem.
- Shallow: He fell in love with Cinderella after their first meeting and they knew nothing about each other.  He simply fell for her beauty.

In Disney's earlier films, the prince's were not very important and were often not developed as characters.  This is unfortunate because they could be really great people, but we would never know it.  This Prince Charming was more developed than the original, but I would personally like to know more!

The Original Prince Charming

The original Prince Charming was featured in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.  He is the first Disney prince and is the first of two "Prince Charming's."  If you would like a short summary of the movie, check out my post titled "An Apple a Day."

Pros:
- Sings: He can sing, so he's got that going for him.
- Strong: He is also capable of lifting Snow White out of a coffin and lift her onto a horse, that could come in handy.
Cons:
- Pedophile: He kisses a 14 year old, unconscious girl in the woods.  It's a romantic gesture, but also slightly creepy.  FYI - he is supposed to be 21 years old.
- Stalker: She has never met this man before and he shows up on her doorstep, climbs over a stone wall and serenades her.  How did he know where she lived?  This feels a bit skeptical to me.
- Does absolutely nothing: Besides true love's kiss, the prince does absolutely nothing in the plot of this story.  Where was he when she was almost killed?  When she ran away and ate a poisoned apple?  He must not have cared that much.

We don't learn much about Prince Charming as a character in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.  So even though it may seem like he doesn't have much going for him, let's give him the benefit of the doubt and bet he has a nice personality.

Let it Go

Note: The summary is the same as last week, considering they are from the same movie.

Frozen was released by the Walt Disney Company in 2013 (IMBD). Two sisters, Anna and Elsa are princesses of the kingdom of Arandelle.  The oldest sister Elsa has magic powers of ice and snow, and accidently harms her sister Anna while they were playing together.  Elsa must learn to hide herself and her powers for the well being of herself and the kingdom.  After their parents die in a shipwreck, Elsa and Anna are alone in their castle.  Elsa becomes queen of Arandelle and must conceal her powers until coronation is over.  Meanwhile Anna is taking advantage of her first time out of the castle by exploring, and ends up falling for a handsome prince named Hans, whom she has just met and claims she has fallen in love with.  Elsa succeeds at her task  of concealing her powers until her and her sister get into an argument about Anna wanting to marry Hans after knowing each other for one day.  Elsa becomes angry and accidently reveals her powers to the entire kingdom, putting Arandelle into an eternal ice and snow.  Everyone is in shock, and she runs away in fear.  Her sister Anna runs after her and is determined to find her sister and have her unfreeze the land.  She asks a young man named Kristoff, his reindeer Sphen, and a cute snowman named Olaf to help her find her sister, and they set off on an adventure.  Anna eventually finds Elsa and tries to talk her into coming home but Elsa refuses and accidently hits Anna in the heart with ice.  Anna begins to feel weak and Kristoff brings her to a healing troll who says Anna will die and the only way to save her is by an act of true love. Meanwhile the people of Arandelle have captured Elsa and locked her in the dungeon of the castle.  Kristoff brings Anna back to Arandelle in a hurry.  When they get there, Kristoff asks the people to bring her to Prince Hans as soon as possible.  The people bring Anna to Hans to receive her true loves kiss, when suddenly Hans reveals he was only after the crown and he didn’t really love her.  He then locks the door leaving Anna alone to die.  Olaf unlocks the door and tries to find a way to save Anna.  Meanwhile Kristoff sees ice and snow erupting from the castle, and he races back to save Anna.  Elsa breaks out of the dungeon and tries to run back to her castle on the mountain, but Hans finds her and tells her that her sister is dead.  Elsa is devastated and falls to the ground in grief.  Meanwhile Olaf sees Kristoff running back to save Anna and Anna uses all of her strength to run outside to meet him in hopes he can save her.  Anna is running to Kristoff and out of the corner of her eye, she sees Hans about to kill her grieving sister.  She looks back and forth debating which way to go, and she than decides to run towards her sister.  Kristoff is watching just as Hans is about to swing his sword, Anna jumps in front of him to save her sister and turns into a solid ice statue and breaks the sword.  Elsa looks up and sees her frozen sister and drapes herself over her and weeps.  After a few moments, Anna and the entire city of Arandelle melt and become the summer it once was.  This was the act of true love.  Elsa and Anna embrace and Elsa begins to control and enjoy the powers she possesses.  Hans is band from the kingdom, Kristoff and Anna share a kiss and it’s once again happily ever after.

The featured Princess this week is Elsa!

Pros:
- Ice Powers: Who doesn't want ice powers!  They are wicked cool (no puns intended).
- Strong:  Elsa has to have some major strength for maintaining her powers, dealing with their parents death alone and composing herself long enough to become queen of Arandelle.
- Caring:  She is willing to run away and isolate herself for her entire life to keep Anna, her family and her kingdom safe.  Even though this may not be the best option, its the thought that counts.
- Let it Go: Need I say more?
- Idina Menzel = Queen

Cons:
- Sheltered:  She literally hides away and doesn't speak to her sister for most of her life.  She doesn't open up and learn to embrace her powers and feelings.
- Deals with her powers in an unhealthy way: She thinks that the way to control her powers is to not feel, which is absolutely insane and impossible to do as a human.  Part of this view of her powers was due to her parent's ideas, but she should embrace them and find their beauty!
- Runs away from her problems: When the whole kingdom found out about her powers she ran away without explanation and when her parents died, she left Anna to grieve alone.  That is so NOT cool Elsa.

As a huge advocate for Mental Health, I think Frozen has a lot of statements to say towards Depression.  Elsa shows many signs of a depressed person and shows the negative outcomes of keeping those feelings locked up.  Be an Anna and support those Elsa's around you.

The Heart is Not So Easily Changed

The featured Princess this week is Anna!

Pros:
- Brave:  She is willing to go save her kingdom and help her sister without hesitation.  She is willing to go through every obstacle for Elsa.
- Optimistic:  Anna has an optimistic view on life and sees the good in everything and everybody,  though sometimes she can be a little too optimistic.
- Selfless/Loving:  She is willing to sacrifice her life and her true love to save her sister, even after her sister shut her out.  This is the ultimate sacrifice.

Cons:
- Naïve/Too trusting:  She not only "falls in love" with Hans after one day, she also wants to marry him and trusts him to manage her kingdom while she's gone.  This was not one of her brightest moments.
- Doesn't let things go: If she would have obeyed her sister and let it go when Elsa didn't give her blessing to her and Hans they never would have gotten into such a mess.  She also wouldn't have been struck in the heart with ice if she would have let Elsa be.  Let it go Anna! ;)
- Clumsy: Let's face it, Anna is a bit of klutz.  She trips over things, runs into people (*cough* Hans *cough*) and falls off of mountains.

Despite her flaws, Anna has a heart of gold and we admire her for that.

Our Fate Lies Within Us

Brave was released by the Walt Disney Company in 2012 (IMBD).  In Scotland, a young princess of the clan DunBorch, was determined to change her fate.  She has come of age to marry and her mother is forcing her into marriage and teaching her to act like a lady, but Merida is more of a bow and arrow, fighting girl.  When Merida's suitors arrive, they are to fight for her hand with archery.  Merida decides she will shoot for her own hand, being the oldest in her family, and wins, but her mother was furious.  Merida runs away and follows the "whisps" and they bring her to a small cottage where an old witch lives.  She gives her a pastry that will change her fate.  She feeds it to her mother, and instead of her mother changing her mind, she turns into a bear!  King Fergus, Merida's father, is known for fighting a ferocious bear who torments the kingdom so she rushes her and her mother out of the house.  They head to the old witches cottage, but she is gone.  With a clue from the witches cottage, she must fix the bond to turn her mother back to a human before she turns into a bear forever.  She must mend the tapestry she had cut earlier back at the castle.  They make their way back to the castle and become closer with each other.  They maneuver their way throughout the castle and find the tapestry, sew it up, and rush to where they must go to fix it.  While they are there, Mor'du, the evil bear, shows up and Queen Elinor must fight him off and save her daughter.  She does and their bond, daughter and mother, is mended and the spell is broken.  Queen Elinor let's her daughter choose to not marry until she wants to.

The featured Princess this week is Merida!

Pros:
- Brave:  Just as the movie title suggests, Merida is brave.  She stands up for herself and her kingdom and not to mention a raging ferocious bear.
- Fights for herself: She doesn't subdue to the standards her mother gives her, breaks the rules and fights for her own hand.
- Skilled/Resourceful:  This girl can kill it with a bow and arrow.  She is also very resourceful while taking care of her and her mother in the woods.  She can survive in the wild and that's more than I can say for most other Disney Princesses besides Pocahontas.

Cons:
- Disobedient: Although I don't believe you should be required to marry to rule a kingdom and if you're not in love, she still disobeyed her mother.
- Magic fixes problems: This whole situation might have been avoided if she had talked to her mother about her thoughts and fears about marriage.  She instead, went and expected magic to fix her problems and it bit her in the butt.  Communication is key!
- Selfish: She doesn't think about her family and or kingdoms needs and thoughts about her marriage.  If marriage is something she needs to do for her kingdom than she could consider it for the sake of her people.  Her mother wanted her taken care of and she can only think about herself and her wants.

A Girl with Golden Hair

Tangled was released by the Walt Disney Company in 2012 (IMBD).  In the kingdom of Corona. there was a king and queen who ruled over the land with great kindness and trust.  They were about to have a baby, but the queen became very sick.  They needed a special magic flower to cure the queen.  An old woman in the forest coveted the flower for herself in order to keep herself young forever.  The palace guards found the flower and cured the queen with it.  The old woman, Gothel, was outraged so she stole their daughter once she was born because the flowers magic manifested in the child's hair.  The kingdom was devastated and the King and Queen released lanterns every year on her birthday in hopes she would someday return.  Mother Gothel raised Rapunzel and never letting Rapunzel leave the tower where they live.  On her eighteenth birthday, Rapunzel's wish was to leave the tower and see the "floating lights."  Mother Gothel did not let her so she took initiative herself.  Flynn Rider, a young thief found Rapunzel's tower and Rapunzel blackmailed him to take to see the lights and bring her back safely.  On there journey, Rapunzel touches many and makes many new friends.  Her and Flynn Rider also fall in love.  When Mother Gothel finds out Rapunzel has left the tower, she goes after her, finds her and breaks Rapunzel's heart by tricking Flynn Rider into abandoning Rapunzel.  He is sent to jail and is to be hanged for his crimes to Corona.  Rapunzel then realizes she is the lost princess and tries to escape, but Mother Gothel will not let her.  Flynn Rider escapes from jail with the help of some friends they made along the way and rushes to save Rapunzel from Gothel.  He climbs the tower and is stabbed by Gothel at the top.  Rapunzel makes a deal with Gothel, that if she can heal him with her hair, she will go with her forever.  When she begins to heal him, he takes a piece of glass and cuts her hair and it looses all it's magic.  Gothel then becomes old and falls from the tower turning to dust and Flynn dies.  Rapunzel weeps over Flynn and a tear falls from her face and heals Flynn Rider.  Rapunzel finds her parents and they all live Happily Ever After.

The featured Princess this week is Rapunzel!  My second favorite Disney Princess!!

Pros:
- Selfless:  She is willing to spend the rest of her life with Mother Gothel, the woman who kidnapped her and isolated her to save the man she loved.
- Brave: She goes on a quest and experiences the outside with exuberance and confidence without fear.
- Kind: She is kind and brings out the kindness in everyone she meets on her journey.
- Adventurous:  She is a dreamer and isn't going to let anybody get in the way of her and her dream.  Even if that means breaking a few rules.

Cons:
- Disobedient: Though I believe that her disobedience was perfectly acceptable, she did still break the rules.
- Too optimistic: She was extremely optimistic about the real world, which is good, but she was not prepared to see the bad in people.
- Naïve: She fell for Flynn Rider pretty early on, causing her heartache in the middle of the movie, luckily that turned out good in the end.
